Head of e-communications


This is a new senior post within the Feline Advisory Bureau (FAB) designed to oversee and co-ordinate the development of an integrated approach to electronic communications through all of FAB’s major activities.

Currently the FAB has three major web sites – (1) www.fabcats.org (iCats.org) aimed to provide information to cat owners and carers, (2) www.isfm.net aimed at providing information to members of FAB’s veterinary division, the International Society of Feline Medicine, and (3) www.ifcw.net aimed at providing information to help the care and welfare of unowned cats. In addition to the web sites, FAB interacts with members and supporters through e-newsletters and social media.

The successful candidate will be responsible for a complete restructuring and redevelopment of our e-communications work and strategy within FAB. They will be a key member of our Communications and Publications Group, and oversee a major change in our communications approach.

Essential attributes of the successful candidate will include a detailed knowledge of veterinary science and cat health; an ability to communicate to and engage with a wide variety of audiences on veterinary matters and cat care in a meaningful way, including veterinary surgeons, cat owners, cat breeders, and those involved in cat boarding and cat rescue; a detailed knowledge of web site design, web authoring, content management systems, writing/editing, and social media.

Major responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Work with the senior management team, and communications team at FAB, to develop the strategy for e-communications within FAB and its different working areas
  • Deconstruct, redesign and reconstruct all three major FAB web sites using a modern CMS and developing them using a layered approach to access of information relevant to the end-user
  • Ensure web sites are fit for purpose – for example professional communications to veterinary members, an integrated and modern approach to encouraging and facilitiating donations at all levels
  • Integrate the websites and other e-communications materials with a new member and supporter database that is currently being implemented at FAB • Reconstruct the ISFM web site to include a member-only portal with restricted access (linked in with the new database) and develop facilities and information within this
  • Oversee and contribute to the development and use of information needed on all three websites, including commission and editing of materials as needed • Develop and co-ordinate electronic communications with members and supporters of the organisation
  • Work closely with the Communications group and Membership/Conferences group within FAB to ensure that e-communications are optimised
  • Work alongside those involved in printed publications to provide help where needed and to co-ordinate written and electronic communication
  • Develop and oversee the use of social media and emerging e-opportunities for the benefit of FAB and its activities
  • Develop and implement a plan to integrate appropriate sponsorship and/or advertising into the web presence

International Fund for Cat Welfare
(IFCW) Co-ordinator

This post is responsible for the overall co-ordination and development of the International Fund for Cat Welfare (IFCW) under the direction and leadership of the senior management team within FAB. The IFCW co-ordinator will be expected to have significant input to the strategic development of IFCW as well as having a major role in developing policies, protocols, documents and plans to help support the work of IFCW.

Essential attributes of the successful candidate will include: a practical knowledge of veterinary aspects of shelter, rescue and TNR (trap, neuter and release) work within the UK and other countries; an ability to undertake practical work and contribute to existing projects in other countries in a practical and pragmatic way; an ability to write, lecture and communicate to different audiences; an understanding of the relationship between NGOs and local government.

Major responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Work with the senior management team at FAB, and the IFCW steering group to determine the strategic development of IFCW
  • Develop written policies, protocols and other materials that enhance the knowledgebase of IFCW so that these can be used to improve the welfare of unowned cats internationally, primarily via local rehoming and neutering organisations
  • Develop educational materials that are practical and can be used by rehoming and neutering organisations throughout the world to improve standards of care for unowned cats
  • Work closely with the FAB Communications and Publications group to develop the IFCW website as a major portal, to communicate and distribute information through other means such as printed materials, social media etc., and to contribute to PR campaigns
  • Contribute to educational courses (seminars, lectures, conferences, distance learning) aimed at improving the welfare of unowned cats internationally, including lecturing
  • Contribute directly to welfare projects for unowned cats internationally where needed, under the direction of the senior management team, and to oversee and co-ordinate a limited number of veterinary volunteers in either contributing practical skills to specific projects or in preparing materials for IFCW use
  • Liaise closely with the FAB team to enhance fundraising opportunities through IFCW
  • Develop collaborative links with other relevant veterinary and non-veterinary organisations involved in the international welfare of unowned animals
