Cat Owner' s Veterinary Handbook

  by John Bower
Published by The Crowood Press, priced £19.95

The Cat Owner's Veterinary Handbook covers all aspects of the cat in sickness and in health. It does not replace the vet but presents helpful advice on home treatments, where this is applicable, and informs the owner when to seek professional advice. Packed full of information, it will be invaluable to the millions of caring owners who regard their cat as 'one of the family'. It is written in plain, everyday language by an experienced veterinary surgeon who has been involved in the medical and surgical problems of the cat for over thirty-five years. The book includes two chapters concerning normal cat behaviour and behavioural problems which have been written by John's wife, Caroline, who is also a veterinary surgeon.

Topics include: The healthy cat in its wild and domesticated state; Choosing a suitable kitten, how to care for it properly and how to avoid behavioural problems; Common infectious diseases and parasites that affect cats, including problems that can arise when a cat is taken overseas; All parts of the cat are examined from the digestive system through to the complicated endocrine [hormone] system; Normal structure and function of each system is examined including the diseases and problems that can occur, and their symptoms and treatment; Behavioural problems, first aid, accidents and emergencies, and the special feline ailments that can emerge in old age.

  Cat Confidential
  by Vicky Halls
Published by Bantam Press, priced £14.99
Vicky Halls is well known to delegates who have attended the FAB Annual Conference over the past few years. Brought back regularly by popular demand, she is always enlightening, sympathetic, sensible and often very amusing. Reading her new book, Cat Confidential (what a great title!) is like being able to take Vicky home after a conference and listen to her for a few hours more. It has the same approach as her talks - a fascination for feline behaviours, from the normal to the bizarre, and a sympathy for all the owners of her cases, whether they too are normal or bizarre. One of her great appeals is her ability to say that she, even with all of her experience, finds a case mystifying or even frightening and how she has learned from her work over the years, including her own mistakes. Saying she is sensible may sound boring, but sometimes it takes courage to say that perhaps some owners have too many cats or that being too obsessed with your cat can be unhealthy and the making of an unhappy cat. A great book for anyone fascinated by felines.
Claire Bessant, Chief Executive, Feline Advisory Bureau.

If Your Cat Could talk - a language course for humans
  by Dr Bruce Fogle
Published by DK Publishing (£9.99 paperback)
Swizzle, a cat from Canterbury who lives with FAB Director, Kim Horsford, reviews:
As an often misunderstood feline (never by my fellow cats though), I sometimes wish I could explain myself in human terms and now Dr Bruce has done some of it for me. This book is full of photos of us fabulous felines that provide great insight into how we express ourselves
whilst never failing to look gorgeous. The strength of this book is in exploring what makes us tick and why we are so unique – the introduction is especially good.

One of my favourite comments is that people (or other species) frequently make better companions for us than another cat – how true! If only you people would listen to this good advice there would be much less feline stress and unhappiness around. It is easy to read and the same points are often made more than once but in different contexts – helpful as you humans can be a bit slow in realising just how special and different we are.

Please take note of the advice on that very small window of opportunity you have when we are kittens if you want to turn us into people-loving, sociable and well-adjusted cats. There are very brief sections on topics like behaviour problems and training (personally I’d take issue with my people if they tried to train me with hidden mouse traps). You will probably need to supplement these areas with some extra study, but hopefully this book will inspire you to start an extensive feline library.

An excellent introduction to what it means to be feline - especially useful to those sad souls who have never lived with a cat and had to make do with other people or even dogs! Of course no need for a course on people for cats – we already know it all!
